So where next?
Traditionally September is the month when the BAPCO Executive Committee are joined by the Regional Chairs and Secretaries to discuss where the Association is moving and how it plans to conduct business and what, if any, changes are required to the rolling five year strategy. This year the meeting will take place on the 14th and 15th of September.
Ambulance award is good news…
I start this month by congratulating O2 and Sungard Vivista on their good news concerning the roll out of the Airwave service to Ambulance Trusts in England. As I understand it, between the two organisations, the Trusts will be provided with the Airwave service together with mobile and handportable terminals and the Sungard Vivista Integrated Communications Control System. Furthermore, Trusts will receive integration and migration services and ongoing support of the TETRA terminals. This award is good news and represents a significant step forward in ambulance communications and emergency services interoperability. BAPCO’s commercial membership at large looks forward to providing the Ambulance Service with the additional support it will inevitably need as it seeks to implement the changes required to make the best use of its investment.
Global Contract
Alcatel has announced that it has been awarded a global contract valued at approximately 250 million US dollars by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) to supply, integrate and deploy its proven driverless train control and telecommunication systems for the Dubai Metro in the United Arab Emirates.
Local Authorities have three weeks to choose their fate in telecoms
Local Authorities across the UK have just over three weeks to potentially determine whether they wish to create citizen-owned wireless networks - potentially eliminating inner and inter-city mobile call costs through the use of wireless VoIP - as opposed to allowing the major mobile network operators to dictate their future, according to UK-based Metranet Communications (www.metranet.co.uk) which is responsible for the UK’s first city-wide Intranet. A major area of the radio spectrum (2500-2690MHz) is due to be released by 1st January 2008. The area to be released is 190MHz wide, and therefore considerably wider than that allocated to 3G networks, which was 140MHz wide.

Ambulance communications contract award
Mid August saw the long awaited annoucement that O2 Airwave and SunGard Vivista have been successful in their bid to provide a communications service together with associated control room equipment to all Ambulance Trusts in England. When the system is installed, reliable voice and data services will help improve ambulance response times and help enhance the scope of care delivery by paramedics at incident scenes.
